GLOS Board holds inaugural meeting

The recently elected GLOS Board of Directors met June 20 in Ann Arbor, Mich., to formally initiate the Great Lakes Observing System Regional Association (GLOS-RA), one of 11 regional nodes of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS).

The board elected officers as follows: Chair William Werick, retired, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Vice Chair Frank Kudrna, CEO of Kudrna & Associates, an engineering firm based in Chicago; Treasurer Alfred Beeton, former acting chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and director of the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory; Secretary Jeffrey Boehm, a senior vice president at the Shedd Aquarium. Initial board terms will run through March 31, 2008.

Other board actions included

  • approval of the GLOS Bylaws, pending suggested revisions;
  • approval of the FY06-07 workplan; and
  • appointing Roger Gauthier, program manager at the Great Lakes Commission, to fill the role of interim executive director for GLOS until a full-time director is hired
A GLOS Steering Committee, made up of 30 key stakeholders, has been instrumental over the last two years in developing a business plan for the GLOS-RA, designing an appropriate governance structure, developing bylaws and compiling short-term priorities for GLOS implementation. The Great Lakes Commission has been leading initial development of GLOS, with funding through the NOAA Coastal Services Center. The board agreed that the Commission will continue to function as GLOS secretariat through June 30, 2008.

The board was joined by more than 60 members of the GLOS Regional Interest Group on June 19 for the first GLOS Annual Meeting, which provided a detailed overview of the program. All presentations are available at www.glos.us/mtgs/2006/

The board will next meet in September 2006.
